Boer Goats
Mojeji Ranch currently has about 120 breeding does and two registered full-blood Boer bucks, Dynomite and Willie. Goats and cattle are complementary, because they forage on different plants. Cattle prefer grass and goats prefer browse (brush and weeds). Therefore, we are able to keep cows and goats on the same piece of land, which minimizes the need to bushhog.
The Boer breed of goats, with their stocky build, are ideal for meat production. Typical Boers, which originated in South Africa, have white bodies and brown heads. During each kidding season, we average two kids per doe. With a five month gestation period, each doe will most likely kid three times every two years.
Although European Americans seldom choose to eat chevon (goat meat), it is actually the world’s most universally consumed meat. It is a very healthy meat, with high protein and lower fat and cholesterol levels than many other meats. Chevon is particularly popular among ethnic groups around religious holidays like Ramadan, Easter and Christmas.
