Guardian Dogs
Guardian dogs are a great addition to any farm that raises goats. Currently, we have one Akbash and two Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. All three of these breeds are ideal for guarding livestock. They live with the goats and are constantly alert to the presence of danger.
Bobbi is our current Alpha dog. Her appearance shows the Great Pyrenees part of her mix, while her sister Ana’s coloring is typical of the Anatolian Shepherd. Bobbi and Ana always work as a team.
Our Akbash, Abiyet (or Abi, for short), was named for her beautiful, white coat. Abiyet means “white” in Arabic. Akbash are a Turkish dog breed and have been bred through the ages in Turkey as guardians. They have only quite recently been introduced in the United States. Abi has recently retired from goat guarding and now guards the chickens and the homestead.
Our cute, but not quite as useful dog is Lucky. She appeared one day on our road and has found her usefulness in guarding the guard dogs while they eat and in alerting us to the presence of visitors. She is also occasionally helpful — but not always — in herding cattle.
