Who We Are
Mojeji Ranch is owned and operated by two generations of the Schrock family. Roger and Carolyn began farming here in 2000 and were joined in 2009 by their son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Janelle Flory Schrock. Son and daughter-in-law Jedd Schrock and Louisa Kaplan, with their son Luka, are involved in the life of the farm from Portland, Oregon, and make frequent visits to lend a hand and encourage.
Roger and Carolyn have spent nearly their entire lives connected to the soil and animals. Roger grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, while Carolyn spent her early years on a mixed farm in Iowa. As a married couple, the Schrocks lived and worked as missionaries in Nigeria and Southern Sudan, where they always grew and raised what they could, including goats, chickens, cows, rabbits and even ostriches and monkeys (the latter just as pets). Back in the states, their sons Jon and Jedd helped with gardening and animal care. Their lifestyle and farming choices are highly informed by their experiences living abroad.
While neither Jon nor Janelle grew up on a farm, both are very interested in issues of sustainability, local food and compassionate care of creation. For several years before moving to the farm, they managed a natural/organic food co-operative and grocery in Richmond, Indiana and gained a wealth of knowledge about organic/natural/local food movements and valuable experiences working with small farmers.
Jon and Janelle joined the Mojeji team because they were interested in seeking a healthy lifestyle in which to grow and learn together. Their arrival made possible the addition of laying hens, expansion of the pastured poultry program and maintenance of a larger goatherd.
Although everyone helps with almost all aspects of the farm, Roger is especially passionate about sustainable grazing practices and holistic resource management. Carolyn monitors record keeping and cares for the health and well-being of the animals (She especially loves the goats and dogs!). Jon spends much of his time working with the animals, fixing fence, and constructing new buildings, such as the new chicken coop and garage. Janelle primarily works on public relations, marketing and record keeping. She is also developing a small home bread-baking business, Local Loaves.
